COMPETITIONS/PUBLIC PROJECTS: Place des arts, Montréal COMPETITIONS/PUBLIC PROJECTS: Gatineau
Gatineau
A juried competition to devise a monument for a vacant site at the entrance to Gatineau-Hull. Our project took as its theme the historical reality of Gatineau-Hull as a centre for the lumber and pulp and paper industry, a reality now virtually invisible. As a child growing up in Ottawa I often drove with my father by the enormous pile of logs at the E.B Eddy mill and saw the log runs still taking place in the Gatineau River. This competition response takes the form of a boomed raft of logs or a log jam and simplifies and abstracts it into a tilting, multi-faceted wooden plane, moving with and cantilevering off the existing terrain as it slopes down towards the Ottawa River.
