UP & COMING; part 1 and 2
(Galerie Articule, Montreal, 1999; Saw Gallery, Ottawa, 2000)

A telephone answering machine project in which artists from all over the world were invited to call the gallery using toll free telephone lines and calling cards. Their messages were heard live in the gallery and nearby hallways and also recorded in an archive which could be consulted in a 'listening room' in the gallery. In Montreal (3-month event) the recording was done using a cassette answering machine system whereas in Ottawa (1 month event) the recording and archiving was entirely digital, with audience interaction through a computer interface (highlights CD published).

A Theatre of Presence:
Mindy Yan-Miller; Isabelle Bernier; Michael Fernandes; Andrew Forster

Group exhibition using the installation work of four artist to explore notions of the performative versus the monumental within contemporary installation practice. Compares the installation work of Mindy Yan-Miller, Michael Fernandes and Isabelle Bernier by way of exploring the pitfalls of the institutionalization and comodification of installation as an international style. Can installation maintain its provocative presence now that it has become such a widespread and slickly practiced discipline? The article compares the work of Boltanski with artists who have used his stylistic permission in their own work. It also explores the theatrical space that installation occupies and the accepted notions of time and truth as they play in that space making reference to the theatre of Beckett and Peter Brook and Trinh T Minh-Ha's examination of documentary film. The text makes a distinction between work of a monumental character and work which is more performative or discursive in nature as having a fundamentally different relation to mortality.

Michael Fernandes: Sensible
(Galerie Articule, Montreal; 1992)

Solo exhibition of installation by this nationally-known artist. A 56 page catalogue including an extensive artist's project was produced for the exhibition (Burning Editions publications).

Ron Huebner: Need Me Like I Need You
(Galerie Burning, Montreal; 1993)

Installation by Amsterdam-based sculptor took place in a storefront commercial space in downtown Montreal. A 32 page full-colour catalogue was produced for the exhibition (Burning Editions publications).
